Ostara, celebrated on 19th–21st March, marks the Spring Equinox, when day and night are of equal length. From this point forward, the days will continue to grow longer, ushering in warmer weather, new life and fresh energy. It is a festival of balance, renewal and fertility, when nature bursts into bloom, animals begin mating and the earth awakens from its winter slumber.
Origins of Ostara
The name, Ostara is a German variant of the Anglo-Saxon name Ēostre (pronounced “oos-ta-ra”), a spring deity whose name is remembered in today’s Christian festival, “Easter”. Ēostre’s symbols—hares and eggs—represent fertility and new life and are still part of Easter traditions today. Like Litha and Mabon, Ostara was not added to the Wheel of the Year until the 1970s.
In ancient Britain, the Spring Equinox was a significant festival, when Anglo-Saxons would celebrate Ēostre’s festival with feasts, dancing and offerings.
Creating an Ostara altar
An Ostara altar should reflect the themes of spring, balance and renewal. Consider adding spring flowers, like daffodils and primroses to symbolise the season’s beauty. Add crystals – such as amethyst, rose quartz or citrine. Candles in pastel shades are great for representing the soft, fresh energy of spring, while sun and moon symbols honour the balance of light and dark.
And, of course, no Ostara altar would be complete without a decorated egg or two, as a fertility symbols and offerings to the tradition of Eostre.
How to celebrate Ostara
Ostara is a time for planting seeds, both literally (in your garden) or metaphorically (in your mind). Whether you plant herbs, vegetables or flowers, or simply set new intentions, Ostara is the perfect time to nurture something new.
🥚 Decorate Eggs – Painting eggs is an ancient pagan custom, representing fertility, protection and abundance.
🌳 Connect with Nature – Take a spring walk, listen to birdsong, and observe the blossoms and budding trees. Consider leaving offerings for the land, such as birdseed or a biodegradable gift.
🔥 Light a Fire or Candle – As with many seasonal festivals, fire is a powerful symbol of energy, passion and transformation. Light a yellow, green, or pastel candle to invite in warmth and growth.
🧘 Find Balance – Since Ostara represents equilibrium, take time to reflect on where your life needs balance. Are you working too much? Neglecting self-care? Use this moment of natural harmony to adjust and set new goals.
🍞 Eat Seasonal Foods – Celebrate with foods that reflect the freshness of spring, such as eggs, leafy greens hot cross buns or honey cakes
